The Circular Economy is based on the principles of a close to zero reduction of waste and pollution, lengthening of the times of use of products and materials and regeneration of natural ecosystems.

If used on a large scale, Circular Economy is able to solve three of the main problems that afflict our society: the economic problem, the ecological one and the social one. These three problems are strongly linked to each other and reinforce each other. For example:

  • A poor economy tends to over-exploit natural resources in order to procure wealth, to use antiquated and polluting technologies, and tends to compensate for work in an inadequate way.
  • A polluted world and in the grip of the greenhouse effect have large costs of repairing damage due to natural disasters which in turn create great inconvenience to the population, not to mention the health problems due to pollution.
  • A high rate of unemployment leads to an increase in crime to combat which are faced with great economic costs. Poverty is also the cause of the intensive exploitation of poor resources (from the point of view of the linear economy), such as large forests or coal.

When three problems are so strongly correlated, we can speak of a single great problem to which a single great solution can be applied: the Circular Economy, whose characteristics are in fact:

  • Significant extension of the life cycle of products
  • Use of renewable energy sources for production and heating
  • Infinite extension of the life cycle of materials
  • Reduction of pollution and CO2 emissions
  • Drive towards research and innovation
  • Increase in the competitiveness of businesses
  • Economic growth and skilled employment
  • Greater social equity

This is why I believe that humanity must consider the Circular Economy with great interest and strive all its efforts to implement it globally.
